MELISSA, Texas — The city of Melissa welcomed more than just a new Walmart Supercenter this fall. It welcomed a cultural icon.
Walmart celebrated the grand opening of its brand-new Supercenter at 1950 McKinney Street with a special “Winter Wonderland” fashion showcase headlined and hosted by Grammy-nominated hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte.
The evening event brought out associates, families, and fashion-forward shoppers eager to experience the blend of community, culture, and entertainment. With MC Lyte serving as DJ, host, and vibe-setter, the celebration quickly became more than a ribbon-cutting — it became a moment.
Earlier in the day, the Walmart Broadcast Network sat down with MC Lyte for an exclusive interview recorded inside the new Supercenter. The conversation offered a rare, relaxed glimpse at the trailblazer behind the turntables — an artist whose influence has stretched across music, film, television, and philanthropy for nearly four decades.
Reflecting on career highlights she never expected, Lyte shared one moment that still stands out: "Performing at the White House for the Obamas. That was special,” she recalled, noting she shared the stage with legends like Carol Burnett, James Taylor, Usher, and Smokey Robinson.
The interview moved seamlessly from music to life to holiday traditions. When asked if she likes to cook during the holidays, she didn’t miss a beat: “I’m in the kitchen eating. I don’t know about cooking.”
For Lyte, the holidays are less about the menu and more about the moments — competitive White Elephant battles, shared meals, and being surrounded by the people who feel like family.
It all came down to one simple truth she offered with a smile: “Spending time with the people you love… and the people who love you… that’s what matters.”
Melissa, one of the fastest-growing communities in North Texas, embraced the grand opening of its new Walmart Supercenter with unmistakable pride. The store brings expanded access to groceries, essential goods, and new local jobs but during opening week, it also became an unexpected stage for fashion, music, and celebration.
One of the evening’s standout moments was Walmart’s “Winter Wonderland” Fashion Showcase, featuring signature lines like Scoop, Madden NYC, and more. Under shimmering lights and snowy décor, associates, families, and local shoppers gathered as models showed off seasonal looks that blended affordability with trend-forward style. MC Lyte set the tone behind the DJ booth mixing classics with holiday energy and turned the fashion showcase into a true community event.
The fashion lines featured that night — including the outfits modeled by Walmart Radio’s own Kirby Gwen are available now on Walmart.com, giving customers a chance to explore the same styles that lit up the runway in Melissa.

From the Melissa High School Band performing in the morning to special guests like Troy Aikman, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and MC Lyte headlining the evening celebration, the full-day event brought community, culture, and style together under one roof. Melissa’s new Supercenter may be the latest addition to the city, but its opening has already become part of the community’s story.
For the associates who worked hard to bring the store to life and for the Melissa families who now have a new neighborhood hub this was more than a grand opening. It was a moment worth remembering.
