3 Safety Tips From a Driving Champ

Get pointers for sharing the road with trucks safely — straight from the source!

As one of Walmart’s award-winning drivers, JB Quarles has a lot more experience than most of us when it comes to practicing safe driving. In fact, he’s logged about 1.5 million accident-free miles in his Walmart rig.

So, who better than JB to give us a few pointers for sharing the road with trucks? Here are three safety tips he wants every driver to know:

  1. Trucks can’t stop on a dime. At 60 mph, it takes an 80,000-pound semi-truck 565 feet to reach a full stop. That’s nearly the length of two football fields!
  2. Never tailgate a semi-truck. The truck cab sits up high, so truck drivers can’t see tailgaters. And when tailgating, car drivers can’t see roadway obstacles that a truck can straddle — but a car can’t. (JB says he often sees ladders on the road – yikes!)
  3. Wait longer than you think to change lanes. After passing a truck, don’t get back in their lane until you can see the whole truck plus some asphalt in your rearview mirror.
